Pioneer defeats Flyers; finish fourth at Starpoint



On April 30, Pioneer defeated visiting Maryvale on Senior Day in an ECIC III boys’ track meet, 97-44, and finished fourth at the Starpoint Team Challenge on May 4. The Panthers are 3-0 to lead ECIC III and 5-0 overall.

The Panthers won 10 events and the Flyers won seven. Tucker Hoffman quadrupled, as he won the 110 high hurdles (17.8 seconds), 400 intermediate hurdles (1:08) and two relays. Hoffman won the 1600-meter relay (3:49) with Cooper Bekiel, Cody Rogers and Trent Reifsteck, and the 3200-meter relay (9:39) with Carson Matyjasik, double winner Rogers and Gabe Kempf. Kempf won three and a half events, as he also won the 800 meters (2:22) and 1600 meters (5:29), plus he tied for first place in the pole vault with double winner Matyjasik (11 ft. even). Reifsteck also doubled, winning the high jump (5 ft. 8 in.). Jon Haggerty won the 3200 meters (12:22) and Luke Fox won the shot put (46 ft. even).

At the Starpoint Team Challenge, the host Spartans won the team title, scoring 101 points. Niagara Falls finished second, after the Wolverines tallied 99 points. Lancaster finished third, after the Legends compiled 91 points. Pioneer finished fourth, after the Panthers added up 83 points. The field contained 17 teams.

Isaac Platt won the pentathlon (2,589 points). The Panthers won the shot put relay (92 ft. 6 in.), with Fox and Rylan Lavery. Karter Giboo and Kempf won the long jump relay (38 ft. 1 in.). Reifsteck and Giboo finished second in the high jump relay (11 ft. even). Kempf and Matyjasik finished second in the pole vault relay (21 ft. even). Fox and Logan Papke finished second in the discus relay (222 ft. 8 in.).

The Panthers finished third in the 3000-meter steeplechase relay (25:35), with Charles Kolasny and Darius VanCuran. Hoffman and Rogers finished third in the 110 high hurdles relay (37.26 seconds). Hoffman and Jon Cruz finished third in the 400 intermediate hurdles relay (2:08.86). The Panthers also finished third in the 3200-meter relay (9:32.81), with Kolasny, Haggerty, Harley Kinmartin and Rogers.

The Panthers finished fifth in the 1600-meter relay (3:44.02), with Hoffman, Matyjasik, Cruz and Kempf. Giboo and Matyjasik finished fifth in the triple jump relay (74 ft. 4.5 in.). Cole Schlueter and John Stoll finished sixth in the 200-meter dash relay (49.79 seconds).

The Panthers visited West Seneca East for an ECIC III meet on May 7. On May 11, Pioneer will be at the Elks’ Wellsville Spring Day. Pioneer visits Williamsville South on May 14 to close the ECIC III dual meet season.
